Reflexology is an ancient healing art first practised by early Indian, Chinese and Egyptian cultures. It is also a science based on physiological and neurological study. As an effective form of therapeutic foot massage, it is a holistic healing technique (holistic meaning whole), that does not isolate disease and treat it symptomatically, nor specifically work on problematic organs or systems. Reflexology deals with the whole person to restore balance and harmony and also reflect the wellbeing of the emotional mind.
How does Reflexology work?
Gentle but firm pressure is applied to specific areas of the feet, which directly relate the body’s systems, stimulating the reflex points. As stress is a major cause of ill health, relaxation is the first step to restoring equilibrium or homeostasis, where circulation can flow unimpeded and supply nutrients and oxygen to the cells. The lines of vital energy known as zones or meridians are worked on in order to clear out blockages caused by obstructions, this is done by stimulating various points along these lines.
How can Reflexology help?
Reflexology benefits the Immune system encouraging healing. It improves circulation, cleanses the body of toxins and impurities, balances the system, revitalises energy and reduces stress, inducing deep relaxation.
“I started having reflexology treatments a few years back, as a way to help me deal with anxiety. Back then it helped me to relax, and made me feel more centred. I still have treatments every week, and as well as giving me some much needed ‘me time’ in a frantic week, I always leave Susan feeling physically and mentally energized, and with a deep sense of peace and balance. I could never have imagined that a treatment that only involves touching the feet could make such a difference to my whole being.” – Z.P.
